Thallium has two stable isotopes, 203TIand 205Tl. Knowing that the atomic weight of thallium is 204.4, which isotope is the more abundant of the two?

The most abundant isotope of Thallium has to be determined if the one isotope (203Tl) has a mass of 203 and other isotope (205Tl) has a mass of 205.

The average weight (atomic weight) of Thallium is 204.4.

Equation for average weight is,

average weight=(%abundanceisotop-1100)×(massofisotop-1) +(%abundanceisotop-2100)×(massofisotop-2)+etc

Explanation

There are two isotopes for Thallium atom.

The mass of isotope-1 (203Tl) is 203

The mass of isotope-2 is (205Tl) is 205.

Let’s take the relative abundance of 203Tl as ‘x’ and 205Tl is ‘100-x’.

Therefore,

Equation for average weight of Thallium is,

204.4=(x100)×(203)+(100-x100)×(205)204.4=(203x100)+(20500-205x100)204
