Chapter 2, Problem 1QC

What evidence suggests that matter is composed of atoms?

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The evidence that suggests that matter is composed of atoms is to be explained.

Concept Introduction:

Atoms are the building blocks of matter. They are composed of subatomic particles such as protons, electrons, and neutrons. Protons are those subatomic particles that are associated with positive charge, electrons are negatively charged particles, and neutrons have no charge. Electrons revolve around the nucleus, while protons and neutrons are embedded in the nucleus.

Explanation of Solution

The scientist John Dalton proposed the atomic theory which states that all matter occupy space and have mass in them, which leads to the existence of atom. He also stated that these atoms are indestructible in nature and cannot be further divided. Atoms of elements are identical, whereas compounds have different atoms.

Conclusion

Matter has mass and occupies space; this observation signifies that matter is composed of atoms.
