Explanation of Solution

Given:

y=(x1)2+2

Concept used:

The vertex form standard equation of the parabola is

y=a(xh)2+k

  1. If the value of a>0 it will opens up.
  2. And if the value of a<0 it will opens down

  3. (h,k) is the vertex of the parabola.
  4. x=h is the equation of the axis of symmetry.

Calculation:

We compare the given equation with the vertex form of standard equation.

And we get a=1,h=1,k=2.

  1. Since the value of a=1>0. Therefore, the given parabola will open up.
  2. (h,k)=(1,2) is the vertex of the parabola.
  3. x=h i.e, x=1 is the equation of the axis of symmetry.
  4. To find the x intercepts, we have to put the value of y=0. As on the x axis
  5. The value of y=0.
  6. Therefore

    y=(x1)2+20=(x1)2+2(x1)2=2x1=±2x=1±2

    But 2 is not exist in real number system. And so this will not intercept the x axis.

  7. To find the y intercepts, we have to put the value of x=0. As on the y axis The value of x=0.
  8. Therefore

    y=(x1)2+2y=(01)2+2y=(1)2+2y=1+2y=3

    Therefore the y intercepts is (0,3).

    From the figure below it is very much clear that the function is decreasing on x(,1). As we can see if we move towards from left to right the functional value is decreasing. And the function is increasing on (1,)
