Explanation of Solution

Given info:

A, B, C, and D are functions independently. The probabilities that A, B, C, and D fail are 0.1, 0.2, 0.05, and 0.3, respectively.

Calculation:

Let A be the event that component A functions, let B be the event that component B functions, let C be the event that component C functions, and let D be the event that component D functions.

Therefore, the probability of A is,

P(A)=10.1=0.9

The probability of B is,

P(B)=10.2=0.8

The probability of C is,

P(C)=10.05=0.95

The probability of D is,

P(D)=10.3=0.7

From the given figure, it is observed that the system functions is,

(AB)(CD).

Therefore,

P((AB)(CD))=P(AB)+P(CD)P(AB)P(CD)

The probability of (AB) is obtained as follows:

P(AB)=P(A)+P(B)P(A)P(B)=0.9+0.8(0.9)(0.8)=1.70.72=0.98

The probability of (CD) is obtained as follows:

P(CD)=P(C)+P(D)P(C)P(D)=0.95+0.7(0.95)(0.7)=1.650.665=0.985
