The conditions that are necessary to carry out dehydrogenation of alkane have to be given.

Concept Introduction:

Alkenes can be prepared in laboratory using alkane as starting material.  When two hydrogen atoms are lost from alkane, the product alkene is formed in a process known as dehydrogenation.

A dehydrogenation reaction is the one in which the hydrogen atom is lost from each of two adjacent carbon atoms resulting in formation of a carbon‑carbon double bond.

In this process there is no change in the carbon chain.

Explanation

When a dehydrogenation reaction takes place, two hydrogen atoms are lost by alkane resulting in the formation of alkene.  The two hydrogen atoms are lost from adjacent carbon atoms.  The result of the loss of two hydrogen atoms is the formation of carbon‑carbon double bond.  The general reaction can be given as shown below,
