Case 2

As the airway resistance increased in this case, the alveoli distal to the bronchial constriction required (shorter______; longer_______) time to inflate. These alveoli are said to have a (short______; long _________) time constant.

Summary Introduction

To review:

The blank space in the statement, “As the airway resistance increased in this case, the alveoli distal to the bronchial constriction required (shorter_______; longer ________) time to inflate. These alveoli are said to have a (short_______; long ________) time constant.”

Introduction:

Airway resistance is the resistance to the flow of gases caused by the reduced size of bronchial airways. The patients with chronic pulmonary respiratory diseases show an increased airway resistance than the tracheobronchial tree of adults. The movement of airflow through bronchi is called tracheobronchial flow or laminar flow.

Please refer to Clinical Application Case-2 for further information.

Explanation

Asthma is one of the chronic obstructive respiratory diseases caused by excessive secretion of mucus, which blocks the bronchial airways. This causes hyperinflation, which reduces alveolar activity. The tracheobronchial tree changes cause the passive bronchial constriction in the lung. The radius of the airways reduces the air flow into the lungs causing asthma and difficulties in breathing are experienced in this condition. The gas flow is directly proportional to the pressure and radius, and inversely proportional to the length of the bronchial airways with reference to Poiseuille’s law of air flow. This explains that if the size of the bronchial airway is decreased it will also affect the rate of flow of gas into the lungs...
