Textbook Problem

If it is 2:00 a.m. Tuesday in New York (EST), what time and day is it in California (PST)? What time is it in London (GMT)? What is the date and time in Sydney, Australia (151°E)?

To determine

The time and day in California (PST), London (GMT), Sydney, Australia (151°E) if the time is 2:00 a.m. Tuesday in New York (EST).

According to the international agreement, 24-time zones are there in a day; each with a span of 15° longitude. This span is because the Earth rotates 15° of longitude in an hour and hence in 24 hours, it completes 360° or 1 complete rotation.

The prime meridian at Greenwich (0° longitude) sets standardized time zones. The prime meridian is the central meridian of each time zone, which is divisible by 15°. When the solar noon sets at the central meridian, it is noon for all the places in the particular time zone.

However, the boundaries of the time zones do not follow the meridians exactly because of the practical problems. Hence, they follow state boundaries. By comparing with the GMT time, the times at any place can be determined. Pacific Time Zone (PST) of the United States and Canada has central meridian of 120°W, and the time here would be 8 hours earlier than the GMT
