Ionic compounds are formed by electrostatic attraction between ions such as monoatomic ions and polyatomic ions; in which positively charged ions is known as cations and negatively charged ions are known as anions.

The sum of charges of ions present in an ionic compound is equals to net charge of the compound.

Explanation

The oxide (O2) ion has 2- charge. So, the oxides formed by two cobalt ions are,

Co2+ ion has 2+ charge, so one oxide (O2) ion is enough to balance the net zero charge of cobalt oxide.

Hence, the ionic compound is formed by Co2+ is CoO.

Co3+ ion has 3+ charge and charge of oxide (O2) ion is 2-, so one Co3+ ion is not balanced by oxide ion
