How does the role of main memory differ from the role of secondary storage?

Program Plan Intro

Differentiate between role of main memory and secondary memory.

Explanation of Solution

Memory is an essential component of the computer that is classified into primary and secondary memory. Primary memory is also known as the main memory. The brain of the computer system is a memory, which is required to store and retrieve data and information. The Central Processing Unit (CPU) directly accesses the main memory. The main memory is volatile which means its content is lost when the computer system is switched off. The secondary storage is permanent storage, the data in it is available on a long-term basis. The secondary storage has high capabilities for data storage and is non-volatile which means its content is available even after a power failure...
