A truck tractor pulls two trailers, one behind the other, at a constant speed of 1.00 × 102 km/h. It takes 0.600 s for the big rig to completely pass onto a bridge 4.00 × 102 m long. For what duration of time is all or part of the truck-trailer combination on the bridge?

The velocity of the rig is 100km/h .

The length of the bridge is 400m .

The time taken is 0.600s .

The formula used to calculate length of the rig is,

Lrig=vt

• Lrig is the length of the rig
• v is the velocity of the rig
• t is the time taken for the rig to pass completely on to the bridge

Substitute 100km/h for v and 0.600s for t to find Lrig .

Lrig=((100km/h)(0.278m/s1km/h))(0.600s)=16.7m

Thus, the length of the rig is 16.7m .

The formula used to calculate the distance covered by the bumper is,

Δx=Lrig+Lbridge

• Lbridge is the length of the bridge
• Δx is the distance covered by the bumper

Substitute 400m for Lbridge and 16
