The amount of oxygen gas in the atmosphere decreases with the increase in altitude. Human body needs an adequate amount of oxygen to perform proper function. The inhaled oxygen reacts with hemoglobin to form oxyhemoglobin. This oxyhemoglobin is essential for human body.

At high altitude, the amount of oxygen reduces significantly. Due to this, sufficient amount of oxyhemoglobin is not formed. As a result, human body suffers high-altitude sickness.

The reaction between oxygen (O2) and hemoglobin (Hb) is,
