Concept explainers
To determine:
The damage to the semilunar valve of the right ventricle would affect blood flow into which vessel.
Introduction:
The cardiovascular system comprises of the heart, blood vessels and the blood. This system helps in distributing nutrients and oxygen to the cells and taking away the wastes and carbon dioxide from the cells of the body.
Explanation of Solution
Heart is a muscular organ that is hollow and helps in pumping oxygen-poor blood by the pulmonary circuit to the lungs and oxygen-rich blood by the systemic circuit to the whole body. It consists of 4 chambers (muscular); the atrium (right and left) and the ventricle (right and left). The heart comprises of covered openings called as the valves that are responsible for directing the blood flow between the vessels and chambers.
There are 2 AV (atrioventricular) valves and 2 semilunar valves. The semilunar valves are responsible for ensuring that the flow of blood occurs between the ventricles and their vessels. The pulmonary semilunar valve or the pulmonary valve of the right ventricle comprises of 3 semilunar cusps (connective tissue).
The blood that flows from the right ventricle passes through these semilunar valves and reaches to the trunk (pulmonary). This is the beginning of the pulmonary circuit. Therefore, if there is any damage to the semilunar valve, then that will affect the blood flow to the pulmonary trunk and further, would affect the pulmonary circuit of the blood flow.
