Explanation of Solution

The kidneys lie behind the peritoneum (retroperitoneally) in the abdomen on either side of the vertebral column. They extend from twelfth thoracic vertebrae to third lumbar vertebrae.

The right kidney is situated 1.5 to 2 centimeters lower than the left kidney due to presence of the liver. Connective tissues and masses of adipose tissues around the kidneys maintain their position and hold them in place.

Conclusion

The kidneys are located retroperitoneally.
