Concept explainers
Interpretation: Three main biochemical functions of lipids need to be explained.
Concept Introduction: Lipids are defined as a class of organic compounds that are fatty acids or their derivatives. Esters of fatty acids that contain group(s) in addition to alcohol and fatty acids are said to be complex lipids.
Explanation of Solution
Lipids show limited solubility in water and are generally soluble in non-polar solvents. The three main biochemical functions of lipids are:
- They store long-term energy.
- They act as a chemical messenger. Some special lipids like hormones and pheromones act as both intracellular and extracellular messenger.
- They function as structural matrices and permeability barriers in biological membranes, they are part of membranes that separate cells and organelles from each other.
