Adenoviruses that cause colds do not have a lipid envelope. Such naked viruses tend to remain infectious outside the body for longer than enveloped viruses. Naked viruses are also less likely to be destroyed by soap and water. Why are naked viruses hardier than enveloped viruses?

Summary Introduction

To explain: Whether the naked viruses are hardier than the enveloped viruses.

Concept introduction: Viruses are the infectious, inactive, and intracellular parasites that only get activated and replicated inside a host cell using its replication machinery. Some viruses contain only genetic material covered by capsid (naked or non-enveloped virus), while others contain a protective lipid bilayer around the capsid (enveloped viruses). Naked viruses are considered virulent than the non-enveloped virus, as they have developed resistance against many adverse conditions than the enveloped one.

Explanation of Solution

Structural differences between viruses can affect their survival:

  • Some structural differences observed in the enveloped than the non-enveloped viruses make them susceptible to deal with more unfavorable conditions. Naked viruses consist of a genetic material (DNA or RNA) that is covered by the protein coat called as capsid. Whereas a non-enveloped virus contains an envelope made up of lipid bilayer. Naked viruses are more exposed to the outside environment and get destroyed easily than the enveloped one...
