Bacteriophages kill their host quickly by ______ .

  1. a. binary fission
  2. b. a lytic pathway
  3. c. a lysogenic pathway
  4. d. transformation

Summary Introduction

Introduction: A virus that infects a bacterium is called as bacteriophage. They resemble viruses in case of structure, mode of reproduction, and genetic material. Like viruses, they have either DNA or RNA as the genetic material and can follow lytic or lysogenic mode of reproduction. They infect and get released out by bursting the host cell (lytic phage) or remain and multiply inside the host cell without destroying them (lysogenic phage).

Explanation of Solution

Reason for correct answer:

Lytic cycle is a life cycle (mode of reproduction) of the bacteriophage of where the viral DNA uses the bacterial host DNA machinery to replicate. After maturation, the phages lyse the host cell and get released into the environment. Released daughter phages are now capable of infecting other bacterial cells and follow the same life cycle.

Option b. is given as “a lytic pathway”.

A bacteriophage follows lytic pathway of reproduction where it breaks opens the cell after the infection and progenies of the phages can get fresh host for infection.

Hence, option b. is correct.

Reason for incorrect answers:

Option a. is given as “binary fission”. Binary fission is one of the asexual modes of reproduction. Their occurrence is specifically characterized in bacteria and some eukaryotes...
