Concept Introduction:

Aromatic hydrocarbons are also known as arenes. They are hydrocarbons in ring with alternative single and double bonds such that the pi electrons undergo delocalization. There is no delocalization present in the aliphatic hydrocarbons. The simplest aromatic hydrocarbon is with 6 carbon atoms, the ring is known as benzene. It was first isolated by Michael Faraday in 1825 by determining the 1:1 ratio of C:H in the compound and molecular formula is determined as C6H6.

Explanation

These two structures are known as the Kekule structures of benzene. If benzene has one of these structures then the C-C bond lengths of the benzene ring must be different from each other. But experimental evidences obtained by obtaining heats of hydrogenation along with the estimation of bond lengths convey that all C-C bond lengths in benzene are identical...
