This happens because of varying levels of partial pressure of gases, carbon dioxide and oxygen in the pulmonary capillaries denoted as PA CO2 and PA O2, respectively. As the diver goes down or descends, the O 2 (oxygen) tends to move into the blood contained in the pulmonary capillary from the alveoli.
