The fall in PA O 2 as aTrue_________ False _________

diver returns to the

surface is known as

the hypoxia of ascent.

Summary Introduction

To review:

Whether the following statement, “The fall in PACO2 (partial pressure of carbon dioxide) as a diver returns to the surface is known as the hypoxia of ascent,” is true or false.

Introduction:

Partial pressure is the pressure of a particular gas present in a mixture of gases. The total pressure of the ideal gas mixture refers to the addition of the partial pressures of the gases present in the mixture.

Explanation

The blood transports oxygen and carbon dioxide through continuous interchange of ions while transporting. So, there is a paradoxical relationship between oxygen and carbon dioxide whenever a diver dives into the water. This happens because of varying levels of partial pressure of gases, carbon dioxide and oxygen in the pulmonary capillaries denoted as PACO2 and PAO2, respectively.

As the diver goes down or descends, the O2 (oxygen) tends to move into the blood contained in the pulmonary capillary from the alveoli. This systemic regulation helps tissue metabolism by providing more O2. This regulation becomes a disadvantage when the diver dives back to the surface leading to the expansion of lungs and decrease in the levels of PAO2...
