Chapter 20, Problem 8P

An Apollo command module orbited the Moon about 100 km above the surface. What was its orbital velocity? What was its orbital period? (Hint: Use the formula for circular velocity, Eq. 5-1a.) (Note: Relevant information can be found in Celestial Profile: The Moon.)

To determine

The orbital period of the Apollo command module.

Answer to Problem 8P

The orbital period of the Apollo command module is 1h58min.

Explanation of Solution

The expression for the orbital period of the Apollo command module is given by,

    T=2π(R+h)v0        (I)

Here, R is the radius of the planet, h is the height of the planet, v0 is the orbital velocity of the object and T is the orbital period of the Apollo command module.

The expression for the orbital velocity of the object is,

    v0=gp(R+h)        (II)

Here, gp is the gravitational acceleration at an altitude from the surface of a planet.

The expression for the gravitational acceleration at an altitude from the surface of a planet is,

    gp=GM(R+h)2

Here, G is the universal gravitational constant and M is the mass of the planet.

Substitute GM(R+h)2 for gp in equation (II) to find v0.

    v0=GM(R+h)2(R+h)=GM(R+h)        (III)

Conclusion:

Substitute 6.67×1011m3/kg.s2 for G, 7.36×1022kg for M, 1737.4km for R and 100km for h  in equation (III) to find v0.

    v0=(6.67×1011m3/kg.s2)(7.36×1022kg)(1737.4km+100km)=(6.67×1011m3/kg.s2)(7.36×1022kg)(1837.4km)(1000m1km)=(6.67×1011m3/kg.s2)(7.36×1022kg)(1837.4×103m)=1.63×103m/s

Substitute 1.63×103m/s for v0, 1737.4km for R and 100km for h  in equation (I) to find T.

    T=2π(1737.4km+100km)1.63×103m/s=2π(1837.4km(1000km1m))1.63×103m/s=11544724.68m1.63×103m/s=7080s

Solve further as,

    T=7080s(1hr3600s)=1h58min

Therefore, the orbital period of the Apollo command module is 1h58min.
