the bends.

Summary Introduction

To review:

Whether the following statement, “Chest pain and coughing caused by decompression sickness are known as bends,” is true or false.

Introduction:

Decompression sickness occurs because of insufficient decompression when exposed to increased or high pressure. While diving, the surrounding pressure regulates the amount of nitrogen that the tissues in the body absorb from the gas breathed in. The gas poses no problem till the diver remains at the optimum pressure. A change in pressure leads to the release in nitrogen gas.

Explanation

Whenever the diver moves to a region where the pressure changes, the absorbed nitrogen gets out in the form of bubbles in the bloodstream and body tissues. The bubbles hence formed near the joints or in the joints cause joint pain or bends.

These, when cause chest pain and coughing, are called chokes. These also lead to paralysis and paresthesia because of the spinal cord involvement and may also result in the failure of the circulatory system which may lead to death...
