Concept introduction: The metal atoms that act as a bridge between the s and p -block elements are called transition elements. They are called the d -block elements and these include the elements of group 3 to group 12 . These elements form a large number of coordination compounds. They have found a large number of applications in biological system and industry.

To determine: The transport of O2 in blood by hemoglobin.

Explanation of Solution

Explanation

Four oxygen molecules can bind to each molecule of hemoglobin. The central metal atom present in hemoglobin is Fe2+ that binds to the oxygen molecules. The coordination number of Fe2+ in hemoglobin is six. When there occurs release of oxygen molecule that site is taken up by the water molecule. The field strength of the oxygen molecule is greater than water molecule, so it can easily replace the water molecules present in the lungs. The hemoglobin releases O2 in the cells and replaces the water molecule
