Catenation is a capacity of an element useful to form variety of compounds by forming bonds with same elements into a series. If an element has a capacity to form covalent bonds that is double and triple bonds then it can form more compounds. And the ability of carbon to form covalent bonds, double and triple bonds, and catenation capacity are the reasons to form large number of compounds.
