There is something that happens to individuals when they move from acting as an individual to becoming part of a group. We see it early in preschool when the otherwise sweet child becomes more aggressive after joining the dominant group. Riots, rumors, and urban legends are examples of collective behavior. People who participate in collective behavior feel less visible or accountable in a crowd than as individuals. A catalyst to this behavior is uncertainty, mixed with a varying array of unsubstantiated inputs. When people are discontent, they are also more likely to accept something as true from a group of people rather than from one rational individual or established source.
