21-71 Prostaglandins have a five-membered ring closure; thromboxanes have a six-membered ring closure. The synthesis of both groups of compounds is prevented by COX inhibitors; the COX enzymes

catalyze ring closure. How can these facts be correlated?

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Prostaglandins have a five-membered ring closure, thromboxanes have a six-membered ring closure. The synthesis of both groups of compounds is prevented by COX inhibitors, the COX enzymes catalyze ring closure. The relation between these facts should be correlated.

Concept introduction:

The enzyme which catalyzes the reaction of ring closure for prostaglandin is known as cyclooxygenase, or COX. The COX enzyme is present in the body in two different forms, COX-1, and COX-2.

Explanation

COX-1 is responsible for catalyzing the normal physiological production of prostaglandins, the ones which are present in the body. Though, COX-2 is the enzyme which catalyzes the production of prostaglandins in response to inflammation.

Prostaglandins are accountable for a number of important processes which occurs in the body, such as stimulating uterine contraction to induce labor.

Thromboxanes are also formed by a ring closure reaction which is catalyzed by the COX enzyme. However, thromboxanes cause platelets in the blood to clump together, resulting in blood clots. Therefore, COX enzyme inhibitors are necessary to prevent the formation of thromboxanes, to prevent the ring-closure reaction...
