Concept Introduction:

Grease is a hydrophobic molecule having no effect of water on it, thus can be removed with the help of soap or detergent.

Soap is formed from the potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide with triglyceride while triglycerides consists of glycerol and 3 fatty acid. Thus, soups are sodium or potassium salt of long chain fatty acids.

Explanation

The molecule of soap contains long carbon chain (long chin of fatty acids) which is hydrophobic in nature. It also contains the polar head which is hydrophilic in nature.

Being hydrophobic in nature, the long chain of hydrocarbon gets attached to the grease on the cloth, as like dissolve like. This results in the formation of micelles which is represented as follows:
