Textbook Problem

The reaction of XeF6 with water gives a yellow solution from which solid xenon trioxide, XeO3 can be isolated (using extreme caution).

(a) Write a balanced equation for this reaction.

(b) What is the molecular geometry of XeO3?

(c) Xenon trioxide is described as treacherous, exploding with little provocation. Even so. It has been possible to determine the enthalpy of formation, +402 kJ/mol, for this compound. Use this value, and the value of the O = O bond energy, to determine the bond energy of the Xe-O bond.

(a)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: To write a balanced chemical equation for the reaction of XeF6 with water.

Concept introduction:

Hydrolysis is a chemical process involving breaking a bond in a molecule using water. There are three types of hydrolysis; salt hydrolysis, acidic hydrolysis and basic hydrolysis. The XeF6 molecule partially hydrolyse in water.

Explanation

The step-wise hydrolysis of XeF6 molecule in water is written as,

    XeF6+H2OXeOF4+2HFXeOF4+H2OXeO2F2+2HFXeO2

(b)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The molecular geometry of XeO3 molecule is to be stated.

Concept introduction: The ground state outer electronic configuration of Xenon atom is 5s25p6, that is the total number of valence shell of electrons in sulfur atom is eight.

According to VSEPR theory, the geometry is predicted by the minimizing the repulsions between electron-pairs in the bonds and lone-pairs of electrons. The VSEPR theory is written as,

Electron-pairlone-pairElectron-pairgeometryMolecularshape20LinearLinear30TrigonalplanarTrigonalplanar21TrigonalplanarBent40TetrahedralTetrahedral31TetrahedralPyramidal22TetrahedralVshape50TrigonalbipyramidalTrigonalbipyramidal41TrigonalbipyramidalSeesaw32TrigonalbipyramidalTshape23TrigonalbipyramidalLinear60OctahedralOctahedral51OctahedralSquarepyramidal42OctahedralSquareplanar

(c)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

To determine the XeO bond energy in XeO3 molecule.

Concept introduction:

The bond dissociation energy is the energy required to break one mole of the gas (in gaseous state) to give the separate atoms in a gaseous state. The bond dissociation energy is the energy of a single bond while bond energy is the average of the all bond dissociation energies. For the diatomic molecule bond dissociation energy is equal to the bond energy of the molecule.

The change of enthalpy to form one mole of a substance from its constituent elements with all substances in the standard form is known as standard enthalpy of formation.

The standard enthalpy of formation (ΔfH) in terms of standard bond dissociation enthalpy (B) is written as,

ΔfH=BproductsBreactants                                                                               (1)
