Concept introduction: The precursor involved in the biosynthesis of Vitamin C is L-gluconic acid.  Lactonase converts gluconic acid into a cyclic ester.  A double bond is introduced into this cyclic ester with the help of enzyme, oxidase.  The resulting product is L-ascorbic acid (Vitamin C).
