Textbook Problem

The two isomers having the formula C2H6O boil at −23°C and 78.5°C. Draw the structure of the isomer that boils at −23°C and of the isomer that boils at 78.5°C.

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The Structures of the isomers of a given molecular formula having a boiling points of -23oC and 78.5oC are to be drawn.

Concept introduction: An isomer is defined as molecules having a same molecular formula but with a different structural arrangement of atoms within the formula. They do not have similar properties and functional group is also differing in their structures.

To determine: The Structures of the isomers of a given molecular formula having a boiling points of -23oC and 78.5oC .

Explanation

Explanation

The given molecular formula is C2H6O . The structures of isomers are shown in Figure 1.

The structures of methoxymethane and ethanol are,

Figure 1

The given molecular formula is C2H6O , as it contains two carbon atoms with six hydrogen atoms which indicate the presence of ethane group. The presence of oxygen with ethane group indicates the given compound is an ether in which oxygen atom is connected to two alkyl groups respectively here the alkyl group is methyl. Hence, the name of the compound is methoxymethane. The functional isomers of ethers are alcohols, the general formula for saturated alcohol is CnH2n+1OH . So the compound is ethanol with a molecular formula of C2H5OH
