Chapter 22, Problem 1P
To determine

State the classification of heat exchangers in terms of flow type and mention the characteristics of each type.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Explanation of Solution

According to the flow type, the heat exchangers are classified into three types given as follows:

  • Parallel flow heat exchanger.
  • Counter flow heat exchanger.
  • Cross-flow heat exchanger.

Parallel flow heat exchanger:

When the hot fluid and cold fluid enter the heat exchanger at the similar end and travel in the identical direction, then the heat exchanger is said to be parallel-flow heat exchanger.

Counter flow heat exchanger:

When the hot fluid and cold fluid enter the heat exchanger at the opposite ends and travel in the opposite direction, then the heat exchanger is said to be counter-flow heat exchanger.

Cross-flow heat exchanger:

When the hot fluid and cold fluid enter the heat exchanger in the perpendicular direction, then the heat exchanger is said to be cross-flow heat exchanger.
