Lichens are the symbiotic association that is formed between the fungus and algae or fungus and cyanobacteria. Corals are symbiotic association that is formed between numerous polyps and dinoflagellates or algae. Symbiodinium is a genus that consists of largest as well as the most prevalent group of dinoflagellates.

Explanation of Solution

In both the lichen symbiosis and coral symbiosis, the producer is a photoautotroph whereas the consumer is a non-phototroph. Here, the producer, algae provides organic compounds to the consumer while the consumer provides a stable habitat as well as minerals. In the association of lichen; algae or the cyanobacteria are phototrophs and fungus is a heterotroph. In the symbiotic association of coral, the phototrophs are red algae or green algae, cyanobacterium or protist and the heterotrophic partner is the coral. A major difference between these two mutualistic associations are lichens that are seen in terrestrial habitats and the corals are seen in marine habitats.
