Chapter 22, Problem 1RQ

What are some uses of hydrocarbons?

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark
To determine

Some uses of hydrocarbons.

Answer to Problem 1RQ

Hydrocarbons are used in fuel and energy production, in LPG, and in the production of many household items, such as containers and plastic bags.

Explanation of Solution

Hydrocarbon is the category of organic compounds which is composed of carbon and hydrogen atoms. It is the most basic and important category in understanding organic compounds and their uses.

Hydrocarbons are compounds that exist naturally and are mainly responsible for fuel and energy. For example, crude oil is composed of hydrocarbon, natural gas is composed of methane (CH4) which is the most basic hydrocarbon, L.P.G (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) is composed of butane (C4H10) which is also a hydrocarbon. The hydrocarbon octane having chemical formula C8H18 is considered as a component of gasoline.

Also, the polymer polyethylene which is made up of hundreds of carbon and hydrogen atoms in a single molecule is a plastic that is used to make many household items, such as containers and plastic bags.

Conclusion:

Therefore, hydrocarbons are used in fuel and energy production, in LPG, and in the production of many household items, such as containers and plastic bags.
