Question
Chapter 22, Problem 22.1P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: Each amide group present in oxytocin is to be classified as 1o, 2o, or 3o.

Concept introduction: The amide is identified as primary (1°), secondary (2°) and tertiary (3°). The primary amide is the one in which nitrogen atom is directly attached one carbon atom only. The secondary amide group is the one in which nitrogen atom is directly attached to two carbon atoms. The tertiary amide group is the one in which nitrogen atom is directly is attached to three carbon atoms.

Answer to Problem 22.1P

The classification of each amide group present in oxytocin as 1o, 2o, or 3o is shown in Figure 1.

Explanation of Solution

The classification of each amide group present in oxytocin as 1o, 2o, or 3o is shown as,

Figure 1

Amides are the organic compounds which contain RCONRR' group where R and R’ are hydrogen atoms. A primary amide group (1o) is the one in which nitrogen atom is bonded to one carbon atom, a secondary amide group (2o) is the one in which nitrogen atom is bonded to two carbon atoms and a tertiary amide group (3o) is the one in which nitrogen atom is bonded to three carbon atoms as shown above.

Conclusion

The classification of each amide group present in oxytocin as 1o, 2o, or 3o is shown in Figure 1.
