What amino acids make up glutathione?

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The amino acids used in the synthesis of glutathione are to be determined.

Concept introduction: Amino acids are defined as organic compounds which contain amine (-NH2) and carboxyl (-COOH) functional groups, along with a side chain (R group) attached to each amino acid. When two or more amino acids are linked in a chain, a compound called peptide is formed in which the carboxyl group of each acid is joined to the amino group of the next forming a -OC-NH- bond, known as peptide bond. Tripeptide is defined as a group of peptides consists of three amino acids in the molecule.

To determine: The amino acids of glutathione.

Explanation

Explanation

The amino acids of glutathione are Glutamicacid,CysteineandGlycine shown in Figure 2.

The structure of glutathione is shown as,

Figure 1

Glutathione is a tripeptide whose structure is shown above. Three amino acids are joined through peptide bond -OC-NH- , with the elimination of water molecule. One of the amino acid has propanoic acid in their R group indicates the presence of glutamic acid in which the internal transfer of a hydrogen ion from the -COOH group to the -NH2 takes place which leave an ion with both a negative charge and a positive charge to form a zwitterions
