Laboratory Manual for Holes Human Anatomy & Physiology Fetal Pig Version, Chapter 22, Problem F22.1A

Figure 1: Deep back muscle groups of erector spinae.

The deep back muscles are short muscles connected with the spine and vertebrae. The erector spinae consists of three different muscles, namely iliocostalis, longissimus, and spinalis muscles.

  • 1 -The group of longissimus capitis, iliocostalis cervicis, and longissimus cervicis - Longissimus capitis is present medial to the longissimus cervicis, and longissimus cervicis lies medial to longissimus thoracis. Ilicostalis cervicis originates from 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th ribs.
  • 2 - The group of spinalis capitis and spinalis cervicis -Spinalis capitis is inseparable and connected to semispinalis capitis. Spinalis cervicis is not a constant muscle and arises from the nuchal ligament.
  • 3. The group of iliocostalis, longissimus, and spinalis −This together known as erector spinae muscle and helps in neck rotation and body posture to be straight.
Conclusion

Thus, the three deep muscle groups of back run through the spine and provide posture and strength to the top body.
