  • Electrons fill orbitals staring with lowest n and moving upwards(Aufbau principle)
  • No two electrons can fill one orbital with the same spin(Pauli Exclusion Principle)
  • For orbitals within the same subshell, the electrons fill each orbital singly before any orbital gets a second electron (Hund’s rule).

Atomic Number is the number of protons in an atom.

  • Atomic Number of cerium is 58. So the total number of electron is 58. On filling the orbitals in the increasing energy as, 1s22s22p63s23p63d104s24p64d104f15s25p65d16s2 and since

    [1s22s22p63s23p63d104s24p64d105s25p6]=[Xe]. The electronic configuration of cerium is [Xe]5d16s24f1. Since there is a loss of 3electron in Ce3+, so the electronic configuration of Ce3+=[Xe] 4f1

  • Atomic Number of neodymium is 60
