Chapter 23, Problem 23.1P

(a)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Principal species that will be eluted and order of elution at pH12 has to be explained.

Concept Introduction:

If pH is greater than pKa then deprotonation occurs and if pH is less than pKb then protonation occurs.

Cation exchangers contain negative bound groups that attract solute cation. And anion exchangers contain positive bound groups that attract solute anion.

Explanation of Solution

pKa of hexanoic acid is 5.09 and pKa of 1-aminohexane is 10.21, hence at pH 12.0, the reaction occurs as follows:

Exploring Chemical Analysis, Chapter 23, Problem 23.1P , additional homework tip 1

At this pH, 1-aminohexane remains as it is. Therefore at pH 12, the mobile phase contains C6H11O2, Na+, OH, and C6H15N as principal species.

As cation exchanger attracts the solute cation, thus all directly passes through the cation exchange column.

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Principal species that will be eluted and order of elution at pH3 has to be explained.

Concept Introduction:

Refer to part (a).

Explanation of Solution

At pH 3.0, reaction occurs as follows:

Exploring Chemical Analysis, Chapter 23, Problem 23.1P , additional homework tip 2

At this pH, hexanoic acid remains as it is.

Therefore at pH 3.0, the mobile phase contains C6H12O2, H+, Cl, and C6H16N+ as principal species. As cation exchanger attracts the solute cation, thus all directly passes through the cation exchange column except that of C6H16N+.

So, the elute mixture contains C6H12O2, H+, and Cl.
