Textbook Problem

Aldehydes and carboxylic acids are formed by oxidation of primary alcohols, and ketones are formed when secondary alcohols are oxidized. Give the name and formula for the alcohol that, when oxidized, gives the following products:

(a) CH3CH2CH2CHO

(b) 2-hexanone

(a)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The name and structure of the alcohols which on oxidation gives following product CH3CH2CH2CHO

Concept introduction:

Alcohols are the hydrocarbons which have OH group attached to one of the carbon atom of the linear chain

Alcohols can be of three types on the basis of degree of carbon atom to which the OH group is attached.

Primary alcohol: The OH group is attached to primary carbon atom.

Secondary alcohol: The OH group is attached to secondary carbon atom

Tertiary alcohol: The OH group is attached to tertiary carbon atom

If a strong oxidizing agent is used, the oxidation of primary alcohol gives carboxylic acid.

A weaker oxidizing or partial oxidation of primary alcohol gives aldehydes.

While secondary alcohols always give ketones on oxidation.

Explanation

A primary alcohol gives aldehyde on partial oxidation.

The product given CH3CH2CH2CHO is an aldehyde which confirms the alcohol must be primary.

As product contain four carbon atoms chain with one oxygen atom so the alcohol will be having four carbon atoms and one oxygen atom as OH
