Nitrogen fixation is a process in which atmospheric nitrogen is converted into fixed nitrogen, such as ammonia, that is used by the plants. The organisms performing this are known to be nitrogen-fixing organisms. The nitrogenase enzyme is used for the reduction of nitrogen gas to ammonium ion.
