Chapter 23.2, Problem 1CSC
Summary Introduction

To determine:

Whether the life cycle and habitats of other fungal groups permit them to grow as large and old as some basidiomycetes.

Introduction:

Basidiomycetes are the filamentous and basidiospores containing fungi. In this group the spores are produced on structures called basidia. In a favorable condition, each spore may develop into whole fungi. Basidiomycete is that division of fungi which includes mushroom, puffballs and stinkhorns. Amanita and Polyporus are the examples of basidiomycetes.

Many fungal infections of humans are considered to be opportunistic, meaning that fungi that are normally free-living (usually in soil) can sometimes survive, and even thrive, on or inside the human body. From the fungal “point of view,” what unique challenges would be encountered when trying to survive on human skin? What about inside human lungs?
