Chapter 24, Problem 11P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The number of ATP equivalents needed to perform palmitic acid from acetyl CoA should be determined.

Concept Introduction:

The steps in the synthesis of palmitoyl CoA and the synthesis of malonyl CoA are as follows:

  7 Acetyl-CoA + 7 HCO3 + 7 ATP4 7 malonyl-CoA + 7 ADP3 + 7 Pi2 + 7 H+

  Acetyl-CoA + 7 malonyl-CoA + 14 NADPH + 14 H+  palmitoyl-CoA + 7 HCO3 + 14 NADP+ + 7 CoASH

The overall reaction for the synthesis of palmitoyl CoA from acetyl CoA is,

  8 Acetyl-CoA + 7 ATP4 + 14 NADPH + 7 H+                                      palmitoyl-CoA + 14 NADP+ + 7 CoASH + 7 ADP3 + 7 Pi2

Considering the fatty acids: (a) Arachidic acid (C20H40O2); molar mass = 312.5 g/mol) (b) Palmitoleic acid (C16H30O2); molar mass = 256.4 g/mol).  How many cycles of β -oxidation are needed for complete oxidation? How many molecules of acetyl CoA are formed from its complete catabolism? How can you calculate the number of molecules (moles) of ATP formed (net) by the complete catabolism of each fatty acid? and the number of moles of ATP formed per gram of each fatty acid metabolized??
The large amount of energy used during aerobic exercise(e.g., running) requires large amounts of oxaloacetate.Explain why acetyl-CoA cannot be used to produceoxaloacetate in this circumstance. What is the sourceof oxaloacetate molecules during aerobic activity?
