Ketone bodies are produced when the balance between the fatty acid metabolism and glucose metabolism is disturbed. This generally happens when a person is on fast. This leads to increase in metabolism of fatty acids and gluconeogenesis of oxaloacetate and thus in effect citric acid cycle is disturbed and stopped.
