Textbook Problem

Draw the Lewis structure for the tripeptide tyrosine histidine-glycine.

Interpretation Introduction

The Lewis structure for the tripeptide tyrosine-histidine-glycine has to be drawn.

Concept introduction: Amino acids condense to form peptide bonds releasing small water molecules. A peptide bond is the chemical bond which is formed between two molecules of amino acid when carboxyl group of one molecule reacts with the amino group of another molecule. A polypeptide containing n amino acids will have (n1) peptide bonds.

The side of a polypeptide chain having free carboxylic group is called C-terminal and the side having free amino group is called N-terminal end.

Refer to the figure 24.2 for the structures of the amino acids.

The sequence of amino acid in which they condense to give peptide chain is important. Changing the sequence of amino acid changes the polypeptide formed.

The sequence of the tripeptide is tyrosine-histidine-glycine. To draw the lewis structure of the tripeptide start with the amino acid present on the left then join the next amino acid in the sequence via peptide linkage and finally the amino acid on the right end is joined via peptide bond. The amino acid at the right end that is glycine will have free carboxylic acid group and the amino acid present at the left end that is tyrosine will have free amino group.

After combining the amino acids complete the octet of each atom with the help of lone pair of electrons
