To determine

How the image of wine glass is formed on tablecloth when filled with white wine, filled with water and when it is empty?

Expert Solution & Answer

Answer to Problem 1CQ

The wine glass image distance will vary depending on the liquid present in the glass as the refractive index of each varies.

Explanation of Solution

The incident light is first refracted when it travel from air to glass then it gets refracted when it travel from glass to wine then it is refracted from wine to glass and finally from glass to air. This whole process produces image of wine glass at certain distance.

If the wine glass is filled with water, the refraction angle of the light changes due the different refractive index value of water when compared to wine. Thus, the image of wine glass is formed at a different location.

If the wine glass is empty it means the wine glass is filled with air and still the wine glass image will be formed on the tablecloth but in a different location as the refractive index of air different from water and wine.
