Chapter 25, Problem 1Q
To determine

Why the camera lens must be moved farther from the sensor or film to focus on closer object.

Expert Solution & Answer

Answer to Problem 1Q

Solution:

The camera lens must be moved to create a focused image

Explanation of Solution

Formula used:

The lens equation is given by

(1f=1do+1di)

Where;

f = Focal length

do= Distance to the object from the lens

di= Distance to the image from the lens

The lens equation (1f=1do+1di) says that as an object gets closer to the lens (do decreases)and since the focal length of the lens is constant, the distance to the image di mustincrease to create a focused image.

Since we cannot move the film or sensor inside the camera, the lens must be moved farther away from the film or sensor to make the distance to the image larger.

This is different from the mechanism of human eye, where the focal length of the eye lens will change according to thedistance to the object from the lens changes.
