What functions are performed by the flutes on a standard twist drill?
The functions performed by the flutes on a standard twist drill.
Explanation of Solution
Cutting Tools used in drilling operation which can be used for different operations such as removing materials, creating holes. It is designed like a circular cross-section, containing cutting tool in the front having torsion or twist like shape. There are spaces in between the twist called flutes.
These drill bits are made up of different materials like High-speed steel, cobalt steel, tungsten steel, high carbon steel. The selection of the drill bit depends upon the material of the specimen.
The spaces in between the twist of the drill bit are called flutes, and the primary function of the flute is to pull out the removed material from the hole without wearing the tip of the drill bit. Another use of the flutes is to provide the cooling oil efficiently when the drill bit is inside the hole to prevent the wearing of the tool.
