The reducing agent needed in the process of lipogenesis is

  1. a. NADPH
  2. b. NADH
  3. c. FADH2
  4. d. no correct response

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The reducing agent needed in the process of lipogenesis has to be identified.

Concept introduction:

Lipogenesis is the pathway for the generation of fatty acid from acetyl CoA. There is a cyclic process that occurs in the enzyme fatty acid synthase. It is a multienzyme complex that ties the reaction responsible for the synthesis of fatty acid.

There is a cyclic process that occurs in the enzyme fatty acid synthase. The one turn of this cyclic process constitutes four reactions. The various intermediates formed in the process are associated with a carrier protein known as ACP. The reactions associated with the chain elongation process for the synthesis of fatty acid occurs in the cell cytosol.

Oxidizing agents are those species which gets reduced and oxidizes the other species present in the chemical reaction. Reducing agent is those species which gets oxidized and reduces the other species present in a chemical reaction. Generally, oxidizing agents are electron acceptor and reducing agents are electron donor.

Explanation of Solution

Reason for correct option:

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate is associated with the redox reactions in metabolism. Its reduced form is NADPH and oxidized form is NADP+.

NADPH acts as a reducing agent in step 2 and step 4 of the chain elongation phase of the cyclic process. Both steps involve the hydrogenation reaction.

Step 2 involves the hydrogenation of acetoacetyl ACP to produce β-hydroxybutyryl ACP with the help of reducing agent NADPH. The carbonyl group is reduced to the hydroxyl group and NADPH is oxidized toNADP+. The reaction of this step is:
