Chapter 26, Problem 1RCQ

How many known planets are in our solar system?

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark
To determine
The total number of planets in solar system.

Explanation of Solution

Solar system consists of innumerous bodies or objects that bound to the sun through gravitational force between the sun and object or body.

Since 2005 in solar system there were 9 planets including Pluto and later it is found that Pluto is not a planet it is a dwarf. Dwarf planets are collection of minute planets. The main reason is that the Pluto used to orbit on the path which is outer edge of the solar system.

Since 2006 the planet Pluto downgraded from the status of planet to dwarf from the solar system planet group. Thus till now there are only eight planets and their respective moon consisting the solar system planet group.

Conclusion:

Therefore, there are eight planets in the solar system.
