When do cold cracks develop?

To determine

To define:

The causes of cold cracks in the weld metal.

Explanation

The cold cracks appear in a weld metal due to dissolving of hydrogen and then diffusing it from the metal to the heat affected zone. Hence it is named as hydrogen-induced cracking. These cracks become longer when the weld solidifies. Cold cracks generally appear during welding of steels due to formation of martensite while cooling of welds. Due to fast cooling, atoms of hydrogen get trapped within the heat affected zone that result into the formation of sharp-edged brittle structure which can further lead to complete weld failure.

The other causes of cold cracks in weld material may be the low ductility of the weld and the internal or residual stresses present in the weld region...
