Nitrogen deficiency stunts plant growth and causes leaves to turn yellow and then die. Why does nitrogen deficiency cause these symptoms? Hint: Think about which biological molecules incorporate nitrogen atoms.
To determine: The causes of nitrogen deficiency in plants.
Concept introduction:
Nitrogen deficiency is the one of the important cause for lower yields in plant crops. Nitrogen is very important factor in different plant growth stages such as tillering and panicle initiation. Nitrogen is also crucial for protein and nucleic acid synthesis. Soil with a lower organic content would not be able to maintain the nitrogen content. Some symptoms are exhibited by the plant that suffers nitrogen deficiency.
Nitrogen deficiency will turn the plant leaves into narrow, erect and yellowish color. Nitrogen is a major component of the nucleic acids (nitrogenous bases ā the building blocks of DNA). It will also affect the mRNA synthesis. When plants face deficiency for nitrogen, then it will greatly affect the nucleic acid synthesis and will not be able to store the genetic material in the cells. Therefore, the cell division is affected.
Another drawback of nitrogen deficiency is the interruption in the protein synthesis...
