Question
Chapter 28, Problem 28.66P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

One of the enzymes need for the metabolism of ethanol uses a derivative of vitamin B1 as a cofactor. To explain it is not surprising that alcoholics develop beriberi, a disease caused by a vitamin B1 deficiency.

Concept introduction:

Vitamin B1 is a cofactor of Thymine pyrophosphate, which is required by the enzyme pyruvate decarboxylase.

Pyruvate decarboxylase is required in ethanol metabolism. It catalyzes the conversion of pyruvate to acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde is catalysed by alcohol dehydrogenase to form ethanol.
